A Christmas Memory, Polish Style July 29, 2010 NyiNya (Out of my depth) Joyful, reverent and lovely, this is a beautiful collection of Christmas music in the European style. As a granddaughter of Polish immigrants, raised in a family that celebrated Christmas and Easter (not to mention July 4, Thanksgiving and Groundhog Day) in our own "traditional" Polish fashion, I was transported in time by these songs. They made me recall so many beloved and half-forgotten memories of my big, crazy Polish family.
I think these songs will do the same for anyone who grew up in one of those oversized and unruly circuses...the kind where Babci and Jadek presided over the Boze Narodzenie feasts at tables bending at the knees with the weight of the gigantic hams, the juicy rings of home made kielbasas (fresh and smoked, all hand-stuffed by Babci) with eye-watering chrzan, hand grated also by Babci...and huge bowls of savory, delicious Kapusta bristling with juicy neck bones, spare ribs and pigs feet (or for the unfortunate, the dreaded Kaputsa z Groch!), and prune-filled, lighter than air paczki, rich, eggy babkas and unbelievably etherial chruschiki, amidst a big, noisy, crowd of parents and siblings, aunts, uncles, in laws and outlaws, cousins, semi-cousins, demi-cousins and might-as-well-be cousins, all at full volume, talking, gesticulating and laughing, eating and drinking, arguing, toasting, passing the platters and heaping their plates again and again!
The title song, "Lulajze Jezuniu" is a soft, sweet ballad...one I remember my mother and grandmother singing. Playing the album for the first time is now my favorite part of Christmas Eve...a private tradition. It's my time machine, letting me be...for a few precious minutes...a child again back in that long-gone world.
If you are of second or third generation Polish descent and can listen to this album without smiling and lauging as the tears rain down your cheeks, go sign on at the Sons of Ireland, chlopiec. You've lost that kochajacy (Polski-style) feelin'.
Brought Back Memories of Childhood May 1, 2010 Cool Grandma I enjoyed this CD very much, as it brought back wonderful childhood memories of singing these songs in school and in church. I especially liked the English translations - perfect for those who don't understand the Polish words.
Enjoyed it February 10, 2010 Diane F. Alloway I really enjoyed this CD. I don't speak Polish, but that didn't matter. The songs were different from most I know and I thought it was neat.
A Must for anyone wanting Polish Christmas Music September 22, 2009 Dahju (Maine) This is a terrifically done terrific collection of Polish Christmas Carols. This CD brought back memories of growing up in a Polish community and Polish parish. Besides very well done choiral renditions of traditional Polish carols, it has English translations of the carols for those who have forgotten or never knew what the lyrics meant. This CD presents what Christmas is about because the music conveys the joy and humanity of the Christmas season. Even for those without Polish heritage this is a collection of Chirstmas music that should be in every home.
I bought them more expensive presents, but THIS WAS MY PARENTS' FAVORITE! January 20, 2009 D. S. Glover (Hollywood, FL United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My 80-something parents were the children of Polish immigrants. They were overjoyed with the familiarity and beauty of the music found in this CD. I was quite pleased with the translations provided in the insert as my parents usually spoke Polish around the house when they didn't want me to know what they were saying, so I never knew quite what message the carols were imparting. I paid more for their other presents this year, but none got the attention and appreciation of this one. They were still singing along with it while putting away their decorations on Little Christmas. They may not even have packed it away...Thank you. It's pretty hard to please an 85 & 80 year old this genuinely!
